Red was not Ferrari’s choice. In the early 1900s international motorsport assigned each country a racing color, and Italy was given red — every Italian car ran in it, whatever the marque.
Ferrari’s first car, the 125 S, wore it in 1947, and the association outlasted the rule that created it. The factory later split the color in two: deeper reds for the road cars, brighter ones for therace team, retuned across the decades to suit how they looked on television.
